Art Talks
This program, conducted by the State Wide Arts Partnership (SWAP) under the direction of the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) and funded by the Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools (POPS), is an excellent way to in-service your faculty and the visual arts core and provide authentic experiences for your students in visual arts.
This program is provided at no cost to you. We have piloted the program in several schools and it has been highly successful. There are programs for elementary, middle, and high school age students.
ELEMENTARY PROGRAM
Faculty Profession Development - A variety of activities, including writing and talking about art, will be presented. Model lessons using the visual art posters provided for . Teaching packets and sixteen classroom sets of postcards will be provided. This in-service takes about one hour and can be conducted for varying group sizes and abilities.
Gallery Experience - Actual artworks, in addition to the poster, will be displayed so that students can have an authentic experience in the visual arts. The gallery can be set up for several hours within a school day, preferably in a separate room (e.g., kiva or media center) and activities will be conducted by a SWAP instructor. The gallery activities will take approximately twenty minutes and facilitates groups of twenty to thirty students at a time.
Studio Experience - A beginning figure drawing lesson for fifty to sixty students at a time will be presented to elementary students grades three through six. This activity is fifty minutes long and can be scheduled in conjunction with the gallery experience. This is held in a gym or lunchroom on the floor. The school needs to provide a 12x18 inch sheet of paper and a pencil for each student, an overhead projector and, if possible a microphone.
MIDDLE SCHOOL/JUNIOR HIGH PROGRAM
Artist Intent/Viewer Interpretation - Students explore aesthetic ideas of artistic intention of meaning in an artwork and the viewers interpretation of the work. How can the student better understand artworks as well and better communicate personal meaning and feeling in their own work. This activity takes approximately 45 minutes per session.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
Critical Eye - Through viewing and discussing art the students will become informed observers and consumers of modern culture. Activities of analysis, interpretation and judgment will be conducted with guided worksheets and instruction. This is an interdisciplinary approach for humanities, history, English, and art. The activities and instruction take about 45 minutes with an additional 30-40 minutes to complete some of the writing assignments.
We are available to come to your school more than one time. However, scheduling priority will be given to schools that have not been previously visited. We can also in-service several schools at the same time, as in district level professional development days. To schedule ArtTalks for your school, fill out the online form or contact the Museum.
