Art Royalty has a long-standing tradition at the Springville Museum of Art, which began in 1907 for the students at Springville High School. It began when the junior high and high school were combined, with students raising money to purchase their favorite painting or sculpture for the Museum’s Permanent Collection. A young lady was nominated from each class, and the class that raised the most money would have their representative serve as Art Queen. The Art Queen winner would then present the work of art selected by the class in an honorary assembly.
Today, the girls competing for Art Royalty are selected based on the quality of their application which highlights adademic and extracurricular activities, service, involvement in arts-related activities and potential service to the Museum. The applications are screened by judges, and the finalists are chosen. The finalists and a parent are then invited to a brunch, where the girls demonstrate a talent and interview with a panel of judges. During the Art Ball, the new Art Royalty is announced.
The purpose and function of the Art Royalty program continues to be that of service to the Museum, Springville High School, and the larger community of Springville. The Art Queen also has the opportunity to serve as an officer in the Museum's Junior Art Guild program and receive a $200 scholarship. Each member of Art Royalty receives a $100 scholarship, and gains valuable leadership and service experience. The application process for Art Royalty begins yearly in April.
